center;\">Description<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let\u2019s start with a basic description of what we have in these F1\/E-Gear cars as a whole. This is commonly called a <strong>robotized gearbox control system<\/strong>. It is <strong>not<\/strong> a conventional automatic transmission (even though many cars have an \u201cAuto\u201d mode).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At its core, the gearbox is a standard manual transmission. It has shift forks and internal gearsets just like a normal 3-pedal car (clutch, brake, and throttle). The difference is that instead of the driver physically moving the shift mechanism and clutch, those actions are performed by a highly advanced electro-hydraulic control system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In other words, the system is an <strong>electro-hydraulic servo system<\/strong> that manages both gearshift and clutch operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are about 6 parts to this system as it relates to the gearbox and how it shifts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1.) Gearbox<\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2.) High Pressure Pump<\/strong> (commonly called the F1 pump or E-Gear pump). Pair this with the <strong>hydraulic reservoir<\/strong>, since the pump draws fluid from it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3.) Power Unit<\/strong> (valve block): 6 solenoid valves, pressure sensor, pressure relief valve, check valve, and bypass screw.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4.) Hydraulic Pressure Accumulator<\/strong> (stores pressure like an air compressor tank stores compressed air).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5.) Hydraulic Gearshift Actuator<\/strong> (physically moves the shift forks based on solenoid control).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>6.) NCR \/ Gearbox Control Unit<\/strong> (the ECU that controls the entire system using driver inputs and vehicle parameters).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Today we are focusing on the Hydraulic Gearshift Actuator itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Hydraulic Actuator<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The actuator\u2019s job is to move the gearshift forks in order to drive both <strong>engagement<\/strong> and <strong>selection<\/strong>. In simple terms: it shifts the car the way you would shift a manual transmission car.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Example:<\/strong> You\u2019re sitting at a stop sign in neutral in a 3-pedal car. You push in the clutch, then move the shift lever into 1st gear. What you don\u2019t see is the external linkage\/gear rod at the transmission pushing or pulling shift forks internally. The diagram earlier only shows the smaller of the two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Smaller internal actuator (selection):<\/strong> This actuator provides the turning\/rotating action of the gearshift command shaft through the hairpin duct. It controls <strong>selection<\/strong> (sometimes described as \u201cclocking\u201d) of the actuator finger.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Analogy:<\/strong> In a 3-pedal car, this is like moving the shifter across the gate\u2014from the 1\u20132 plane, to the 3\u20134 plane, to the 5\u20136 plane. You are positioning the finger where it needs to be <em>before<\/em> the gear is actually engaged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Larger internal actuator (engagement):<\/strong> This actuator provides the horizontal movement that actually engages the shift forks. It\u2019s the one that has the hairpin duct attached (see the lower of the two photos).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the top photo you can see two brass-type end caps and the outer seals that retain pressurized fluid in the chambers. This actuator remains attached to the gearshift command shaft, but it unbolts at the location of the inner C-clip shown in the photo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The lower photo also shows the cam of the upper actuator that turns\/clocks the gearshift command shaft through the hairpin duct. justify;\">Internally, the seals and layout inside the housing are very similar between the smaller and larger actuators. The difference is the <strong>function<\/strong> each one provides when hydraulic pressure is applied.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Selection and Engagement<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Selection:<\/strong> The gearshift command shaft has 4 possible positions separated by 15-degree angles it can rotate to. Selection is the rotary movement that aligns the finger with the correct shift fork. The smaller actuator converts fluid pressure (from the selection solenoids) into rotary movement to position the finger. The gear selection solenoids are <strong>EV3, EV4, and EV5<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Engagement:<\/strong> Once the finger is aligned with the desired shift fork, the command shaft must move to engage that gear. This is done using stored pressure in the accumulator, activated by solenoids directing pressure to the larger internal actuator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The finger has three possible engagement states: <strong>Odd gears<\/strong>, <strong>Even gears + Reverse<\/strong>, and <strong>Neutral<\/strong>. The engagement solenoids are <strong>EV1<\/strong> (Odd gears) and <strong>EV2<\/strong> (Even gears + Reverse). Both <strong>EV1 and EV2<\/strong> on together command Neutral.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This all happens extremely fast. style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hydraulic actuator is equipped with two passive sensors designed to monitor the actual position of the actuator finger. One sensor monitors the <strong>selection stroke<\/strong> while the other monitors the <strong>engagement stroke<\/strong>. These are hall-effect sensors that convert the output signal of the hall element into a 0\u20135V DC signal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the NCR doesn\u2019t receive the appropriate signal, it can disable the car as a safety feature.
